Local Area Information

Foxup is a hamlet in the Yorkshire Dales, in the little known and therefore very peaceful Littondale, North Yorkshire. The source of the River Skirfare starts in Foxup, at the confluence of Foxup Beck and Cosh Beck, and the bridge over Foxup Beck in the hamlet is 17th century and was listed Grade ll in 1958.

The name Foxup is of Old English origin, meaning “fox valley”, from fox and hop “small enclosed valley”, apparently in contrast to the adjacent valley of Cosh Beck, known as Harrow, meaning “hare valley”.

Halton Gill is small village 0.75 miles away and was the location for the Sainsbury Christmas advert with Jamie Oliver several years ago, as well as the film Woman In Black starring Daniel Radcliffe and also features in All Creatures Great and Small. It is a typical Dales farming village in a picturesque setting.

Foxup is located 9 miles north of Settle (20-25 minutes drive depending on how many sheep you meet), through some of the best hilly scenery in the Dales; 17 miles from Skipton (35-40 minutes drive through quiet lanes flanked by typical Dales countryside); 13 miles from Grassington (30 minutes drive); 13 miles from Malham (30 minutes); 28 miles from Hawes (55 minutes drive); 36 miles from Harrogate (1 hour 5 minutes); 40 miles from Kendal and the joys of the Lake District (1 hour 10 minutes).

Please note we are very rural and the nearest shop is either Settle (20-25 minutes drive) or Threshfield (25 minutes drive).
